The C30 controller system is a programmable logic controller for performing substation or bay automation that can also be used for expanding the I/O capability of protection devices and replacing Sequence of Event (SOE) recorders. Accurate time synchronization is required to coordinate the actions of protective relays, generator controllers, distributed resources, power system controllers, energy storage, and microgrids. Every device must be synchronized to the same time source to ensure coordinated action. Traditional time synchronization methods have shortcomings, such as the separate analog copper wiring required for IRIG-B or the lower accuracy of SNTP/NTP over Ethernet networks.

The MultiSync™ 100 uses the IEEE Standard 1588-2008 for Precision Clock Synchronization Protocols used in Networked Measurement and Control Systems, as well as the C37.238-2011 IEEE Standard Profile used in Precision Time Protocols within Power System Applications. As a result, the MultiSync 100 provides highly accurate time synchronization, and allows for the gradual retirement of less accurate or more costly methods.

The P847 Phasor Measurement Unit forms part of GE’s system monitoring and control. The devices is used to measure power system data in real time and report to the PDC (Phasor Data Concentrator) for visualization, data storage and most importantly for running a variety of ‘on line’ and ‘off line’ applications in systems analysis and control. The ultimate goal is to run the system economically and preserve system stability following major disturbances.

The P847 is GPS synchronized externally through a fiber-optic input (1PPS) and connected to an accurate IRIG-B source (the P594). The PMU function is designed to support IEEE C37.118 – 2011 (2014 amendment) with enhanced performance under off-nominal and dynamic system conditions due to an advanced frequency tracking algorithm.
