Main characteristics: | Sensitive rotor earth fault protection using low frequency injection method |
Protection Type | Generator |
The MiCOM Alstom P346 generator protection relay have been designed for the protection of a wide range of generators.
The Alstom P346 is suitable for the protection of medium to large size generators and is the same as the P343 but without 100% stator earth fault, pole slipping and dead machine protection.
The P346 also includes 10 function keys for integral scheme or operator control functionality and tri-color (red/yellow/green) LEDs. Rotor earth fault protection is provided by the P391 low frequency square wave injection, coupling and measurement unit connected to the rotor circuit. The measurement of the rotor resistance is passed to the P346 via a current loop output (0-20 mA) on the P391 connected to one of the 4 current loop inputs on
the P346. The rotor ground fault protection is only available if the relay includes the CLIO hardware option.
The Micom P346 supports the following relay management functions in addition to the functions shown above.

Alstom VAA33ZG8338BCH 110V DC : Type VAA Auxiliary Relays
Features
Control, alarm, indication and other auxiliary duties in ac or dc systems.
The type VAA Plug-in-relays is specially designed for industrial control duties requiring respective switching operations. It is capable of providing over
5 million operations without servicing
and will withstand an operation of up to 600 per hour.
Alstom VAA33ZG8338BCH 110V DC General descriptionVAA relays are voltage operated relays. The relays are attracted armature units of compact design with positive action and a high degree of mechanical stability. The relays can be supplied with self, or hand reset contacts and changeover contacts.
Standard contacts are of silver/copper alloy. They are shaped and positioned to ensure a reliable and low resistance normally open or normally closed contact. Standard VAA 11/21 relays are suitable for ac/dc supply and standard VAA 13/23 relays are suitable for dc supply only.
VAA21/22/23 are double pole versions of VAA 11/12/13 respectively.
VAA 31/33 are Triple pole versions of VAA 11/12/13 respectively.
When it is necessary to break heavy or highly inductive dc loads, heavy duty magnetic blow out type contacts can be provided. These contacts use the magnetic field of a small permanent magnet to force the arc onto the arcing horns away from the contact tips. The breaking capacity of the heavy duty contact is shown by the curves in Figure 1.
Auxiliary relays with delay on pick-up or drop-off can be supplied on specific request. Similarly relays with magnetic blow out contacts can also be supplied on specific request.
The standard VAA relays provide only instantaneous self or hand reset contacts.
To ensure a longer operating life, the tips of the silver contacts have a domed pro- file, the optimum design for the repetitive operation duties of industrial applications.
Although the standard designs are suitable for dc and full-wave rectified ac systems only, alternative versions for ac operation are available.

Check synchronising relays are used to prevent interconnection of badly synchronised supplies. Type SKD relays are generally used in auto reclosing sequence of interconnectors along with the auto reclosing relay. Type SKE relays are used to safeguard manual synchronising of generators. The check synchronising relay contacts are normally connected in series with the circuit breaker closing circuit and ensures that the differences in phase, voltage and frequency are within pre-selected limits before switching in an incoming alternator or interconnecting two sections of a power system.
Check Synchronising Relay SKE11BF8002BCH FeaturesPhase difference measurement Phase measurement is achieved by algebraically subtracting the two supply voltage waveforms and comparing the resultant modulated beat waveform envelope with a dc reference voltage (See Figure 1).
The dc reference is proportioned to the sum of the peaks of the two supply voltages to provide phase measurement independent of supply voltage variation. Referring to Figure 2, the resulting voltage produced after subtraction is passed via the gate (which is opened when the VTI supply is present) to the phase angle comparator and integrating amplifier.
The signal is compared with the dc reference and produces a smoothed output to the relay drive unit if the signal is less than dc reference. The relay drive circuit prevents chatter of the relay at the just-operate condition.

Frequency difference measurement Frequency difference measurement is achieved by checking that the phase angle traversed in a defined period is less than
a pre-determined value. Referring to the block diagram the output from the phase measurement circuit drives an accurately calibrated timer. The timer operates the relay on completion of its timing cycle, if the output from the phase measurement circuit persists.
The relationship between timer setting and frequency difference is given in Table 1.
Voltage difference measurement Two types of voltage lockout are available. Type SKD compares the amplitude of the two supply voltages, with a stabilized dc reference which is proportioned to the nominal supply voltage. The Voltage lockout circuit inhibits the gate if either voltage is below the preset limit. Type SKE compares the two supply voltages and inhibits the gate if the difference between the supply voltages exceeds the preset limit.

VTT is a static time delay relay which is particularly suitable for applications requiring large number of operations and consistent accuracy with little or no maintenance over long periods. It is also commonly used in industrial processes.
Features
• Consistent accuracy
• Reliability
• Low burden
• Reduced maintenance
• Immunity to transients and surges; withstands 5 kv impulse voltage test
• Relays with heavy-duty magnetic blow-out contacts also available
Type VTT 11 units have a delayed pick-up, i.e., timing is started by closing an initiating contact and the output relay is energised at the end of the set time. The unit resets when the initiating contact is reopened.
Type VTT 12 units have a delayed drop-off, i.e., the output relay is normally energised. Timing is started by opening an initiating contact and the output relay is de-energised at the end of the set time. The unit resets when the initiating contact is reclosed.

Phase difference measurement Phase measurement is achieved by algebraically subtracting the two supply voltage waveforms and comparing the resultant modulated beat waveform envelope with a dc reference voltage (See Figure 1).
